US ambassador to Australia Caroline Kennedy visits War Memorial to learn more about elite team that helped rescue JFK during WWII

When a Japanese destroyer rammed a US patrol boat during World War II, it came perilously close to snuffing out an American political dynasty.

On August 2, 1943, the patrol torpedo boat PT-109 was on the hunt for enemy shipping in Solomon Islands, when it was rammed in the dead of night by a Japanese destroyer.

At the helm of the PT-109 was a young Lieutenant, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, who would go on to become president of the United States.

His bravery in guiding his surviving injured crewmates to safety has become American folklore.

ACT house prices are 'flattening out' as auction clearance rates hit lowest level since 2020

Auction clearance rates in Canberra have dropped to their lowest level since 2020, and that, coupled with stalling growth in house prices, has led to predictions the ACT is reverting to a buyers' market.

CoreLogic data show Canberra's preliminary auction clearance rate fell to 51.2 per cent for the week ending July 3, its lowest point since April 2020.

CoreLogic head of research Tim Lawless said he expected clearance rates to continue falling.

"This is the third week over the past four weeks where clearance rates have been below the 60 per cent mark, and just going back to April earlier this year we were seeing clearance rates consistently around 70 per cent," he said.

Canberra man pleads guilty to running over police officer, admits he was high on methamphetamines

A Canberra man who ran over a police officer, driving with him on the bonnet of the car for 30 metres, has pleaded guilty to the hit and run in Queanbeyan Local Court.

Stephen McCracken, 30, and a co-accused were driving from police in two stolen vehicles in a high-speed police chase in Nimmitabel, near the Snowy Mountains, last August, documents tendered to the court revealed.

When police exited the car to arrest the co-accused, officers said he jumped into McCracken's vehicle, before McCracken drove the car into one of the two arresting officers, Senior Constable Jason Farrell.

Court documents revealed the officer remained on the bonnet for about 30 metres before he was thrown and landed face down on the road.

Japanese beer giant Kirin, linked to Australian brewers, cuts ties with Myanmar junta in what activists call an 'irresponsible exit'

Japanese beer giant Kirin has signalled it will make good on a promise to disentangle its business from the Myanmar junta after a military coup last year.

But critics say the way the company plans to withdraw from the conflict-riddled country — a share buyback scheme — is an "irresponsible exit".

Kirin is the parent company of Lion, which boasts Australian brews including Tooheys, Furphy, XXXX, Little Creatures, James Squire, James Boag, Hahn and White Rabbit, among others.

The Myanmar military overthrew the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi on February 1 last year, imprisoning senior members of the government, as well as Australian economist Sean Turnell.
