Report shows growing number of Australians believe climate change effects already being felt

Over the past 15 years, Australians have weathered myriad climate-related disasters including catastrophic bushfires, devastating droughts, and now destructive floods.

It is perhaps unsurprising that new research shows people's attitudes towards climate change have shifted as they have been exposed firsthand to the impacts of a warming planet.

Those attitudes have been mapped out in the annual Climate of the Nation report, which began in 2007 and is now conducted by internet-based market research firm YouGov for think tank The Australia Institute.

ACT government distances itself from plan to demolish Thoroughbred Park, Canberra's only horse-racing venue

The ACT government has prepared for a future without horse racing, drawing up plans to build housing on Canberra's only racecourse.

However, Chief Minister Andrew Barr says he has no intention to end the sport in the ACT — he says the plan is simply an option.

The government released a draft development strategy for the city's inner north on one of racing's biggest days, Melbourne Cup Day.

It included two options for Thoroughbred Park's future: one is turning some of the site into homes and shops, the other is developing all of it and scrapping the race track in the process.

Iris Capital's Alice Springs poker machines expansion bid stopped by NT government

The Northern Territory government has suspended applications for pokies licences at Alice Springs pubs and hotels for nine months after widespread community backlash.

Hospitality giant Iris Capital has applications in for 60 new pokies to be installed in pubs and hotels across the town, including in multiple venues where there were previously none.

But the government has received almost 700 submissions from residents calling for the Director of Gaming Machines to refuse the applications.

Iris Capital will now have to wait until June 2023 to discover the outcome.

Proposal to ban more single-use plastics leaves ACT businesses, charities searching for viable, safe alternatives

Takeaway food orders could soon come packaged differently in Canberra with plastic containers part of the next stage of the ACT government's plan to phase out single-use plastics.

Under the proposed changes, single-use plastic plates and bowls, heavyweight plastic bags and microbeads in cosmetic and cleaning products would also be banned in the territory from July next year.

As the government seeks community consultation on the additional bans, some Canberra businesses and charities are already investigating alternatives — and raising some concerns in the process.
