National Museum of Australia's latest acquisition depicts the Rainbow Serpent's wrath in the form of Cyclone Tracy

In 1975, in the wake of Cyclone Tracy's destruction of Darwin, Rover Thomas had a series of powerful dreams in which the spirit of his recently deceased aunty visited him.

Over many dreams, she told him that when she died, her spirit had surveyed the devastation the cyclone had caused and she had visited him to share the lesson she had learnt.

Her message propelled the renowned Kimberley artist into action, leading to the creation of one of his major works Jabanunga Goorialla (The Rainbow Serpent).

Face masks will not be required at most indoor venues from tomorrow and local businesses are getting ready

Many Canberra business owners have struggled to keep afloat since Canberra's COVID-19 health directions began in earnest last year, with the policing of face masks, density limits and check-in requirements being left to establishment staff.

Now the ACT government has announced that from 6pm on Friday, February 25, face masks will only be required to be worn in a select few indoor settings.

Masks will still be required on public transport, in rideshares, indoors at any school or childcare centre, at hospitals and other healthcare facilities, correctional facilities and the Canberra Airport.

Canberra man charged with attacking 11-year-old girl, strangling her until she was unconscious

Chilling details have emerged about an alleged attack on an 11-year-old Canberra girl, who was knocked off her bike and strangled until she was unconscious, on her way home from school yesterday.

A 23-year-old Canberra man was charged over the assault and choking in the ACT Magistrates Court this morning.

Magistrate Beth Campbell said the alleged attack was random, terrifying and "abhorrent", amounting to "every parent's worst nightmare".

The court heard the girl had rung her mother from school to say she would ride home through the Fadden Pines park.

Canberra woman who claimed she was a 'sovereign state' fined for breaching public health directions

A woman who refused to check in at a Canberra store during the height of the 2021 COVID-19 outbreak has been fined $450.

Elvira Shagabuddinova was found guilty of trespass, failing to comply with public health directions and refusing to provide her name to police in the ACT Magistrates Court today.

The 39-year-old was arrested in August 2021 after she failed to check-in at a St Vincent de Paul store in Greenway, in Canberra's south, as per the ACT government mandate.

She did not appear in court today, but had previously told the court she was exempt from public health orders as she was a "sovereign state".

Multi-million-dollar bill to repair 'substantial' fire damage at Old Parliament House in Canberra

A fire at an anti-government protest caused "substantial damage" to Canberra's Old Parliament House that will cost more than $4 million to repair.

Daryl Karp, the director of the heritage building's main tenant, the Museum of Australian Democracy, said discovering the extent of the damage was devastating.

The building's iconic front entrance, where political history unfolded throughout last century, "will never be the same", she said.

However, most of the damage inside the building — caused largely by smoke and water — can be fixed, with some painstaking restoration efforts.
